Live, from New York, it's my sister.

October 15, 2008 by susan

I thought this comment by DKNY from an earlier post was worth bumping up. It's a hopeful piece after yesterday's dark news.

For those new to this blog, DKNY is not a designer of pricey women's wear, she's (full disclosure) my sister. And during the primaries she was supporting Hillary Clinton, which didn't always hang well at the Clothes Line. I like this piece because it's upbeat, it has an NYC perspective, and she shows a gracious enthusiasm for the guy who beat her gal. Oh yeah, and because she's my sister. BTW, if scripture's not your thing, don't be put off. It's not usually hers either, but she plays it out nicely here.

****
It's not my bent to quote scripture to you, but here goes.

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report: If there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things".
St. Paul, to the Phillipians? (or someone)

Seems like what Obama does, and has been doing, all along.
From my perspective:
Whatsoever things are lovely:
In NY, where I live, the mood has never been more enthusiastic for any election I can recall. Workers in the nursing home where I work are sporting and swapping Obama buttons, talking excitedly of the debates, yes, the issues, and even organizing a bus trip to PA to help register voters, instead of the usual monthly bus trip to Atlantic City to gamble. This crowd is usually in the "aw, politicians are all the same" camp. The new spirit is lovely to behold.

Whatsoever things are of good report:
The news: The polls go up and up almost daily, and almost everywhere, for the Obama and the Dems. Yesssss!!!
Gordon Brown leads the way sure footedly and eloquently, proclaiming that government needs to be the secure rock for
us, individuals buffeted about in the whirlwinds of this economic mess. Hooray for Govmint! And yes, we'll soon have our own surefooted and eloquent leader, right here in the USA. (Although there's something extra fatherly/reassuring about that British accent)
Paul Krugman wins Nobel. PK, god bless him, has always been a voice of reason and wisdom - good to see such merit rewarded.

If there be any virtue... McCain defends Obama as someone we needn't fear, good and decent man, etc. And Obama thanks him for saying same. Even though the motivation was probably that "otherizing" Obama wasn't working, and that civility polls better, for both sides, well, good. Let's hear it for civility polling better. Civility (and manners) on Obama's part have been working in this election cycle. Let's follow his lead.

It's said that indifference, not hate, is the opposite of love. So if we show indifference, not only is it more civil, but........well, you get it.
So, brethren, end of epistle for the day, "think on these things."

Hopefully you'll all let me still offer two cents worth of comment...

As I mowed the grass one last time this afternoon I couldn't help but be puzzled over the irony of John McCain trying to make the last weeks of the campaign a referendum on Barack Obama's character. Does anyone really know who John McCain is anymore? Is he the caution-to-the-wind-maverick? The I've-got-the-scars-to-prove-it-cause I-piss-everybody-off-reformer? The erractic gambler who picked Sarah-she's-got-a-one-tough-fella Palin? The steady-hand-at-the-tiller Captain Kirk? Or is he the I'm-angry-they're-angry-everybody's-angry-and-we're-not-going-to-take-it-anymore defender of America's Plumbers and littel guys?

I don't know.

The only thing I think McCain seems sure about is he's not George W. Bush or George Wallace. He was serious when he changed the theme of his campaign to "Change is coming"! He changes character as fast as Minnesota weather. But then the Republican party is so fractured and multi-ideological he's left with so many bases he has to appeal to he's tried on more masks than a kid in a costume shop the week before Halloween.

Since this post centered around a scripture quote--I'll share a rememberance I have as a small kid sitting through church one Sunday when my ears perked up at something the pastor said--something I never forgot. He said, "People are a lot like a drinking cup, if you want to know what's inside them, bump 'em and see what spills over."

Now that I've seen John McCain and Sarah Palin getting bumped (down in the polls) on a regular basis and have seen what spills over, I'm afraid I've glimpsed an important aspect of their true character.

If so, it ain't pretty.

On the other hand, Obama gets bumped, hard, and often, and everyone is surprised how consistently calm and undamning the spillage is...looks like a next President to me.

I will vote Obama.
