First the wingnuts came for Bill Clinton,
I remained silent;
I am not Bill Clinton.
When they made up stuff about Gore,
I remained silent;
I am not Gore.
When they lied about John Kerry
I didn't speak up for him;
I complained about how he ran his campaign.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out;
I am a Democrat

LeftyMN pointed me to Digby's great post today. Digby muses about how the mega-smear on Al Gore re electricity usage for his home took hold. He's not alone in his wonderment. Apparently this slimy story has now made its way to Germany, unabated, and untouched by the truth.
It's abundantly clear that the Republics fear Al Gore's potential run for the presidency above all else. As well they should. Gore is more than an 800-pound gorilla. He is quite likely the 200-plus-pound next president of the United States. Recognizing that possibility, the Repubs have begun lobbing dirty bombs in all directions, hoping for a direct hit to bring him down before he's off the blocks.
This is, of course, only the beginning. Frankly, I can't fathom why Gore would subject himself to two years of this disgusting sliming, but he needs to put up his puke shield and come to the aid of the country. The bottom line here, however, is that someone needs to have his back. Where, may I ask, are the Democrats? Why is Howard Dean not unleashing the forces of truth and unity in support of Gore? Why are the Democrats MIA yet again? Digby and others are demanding answers and they're not mincing words:
It's a good question that Dave Johnson and James Boyce go a long way toward answering in their post. There are many factors, but this is, I think, what it really comes down to:
Where was the Democratic National Committee on Tuesday and Wednesday as these lies gained hold? Where was any Democratic-oriented Group? There were the progressive bloggers, Media Matters and CAP's Think Progress and very few others -- the usual suspects -- and this is all that Gore and our other leaders have watching their backs. They sure aren't watching each other's.
I am airing this dirty laundry on the Clothesline today because it's time these things were said out loud. In a recent article, George Lakoff writes about Iran and the words we dare not speak, but must: NUCLEAR WAR. It's an important read.
But my point is that there are other words that must be spoken: The Democrats are failing. They're doing a lousy job of leveraging their majority, of satisfactorily resolving much of anything related to Iraq or Iran, and they are failing to protect their own, e.g., Al Gore.
This man deserves the best we have to give him. He is considering the possibility of sacrificing his personal life for center stage, in order to clean up the horrendous debris in the aftermath of Hurricane George.
Hellooo? Does anybody give a rat's ass? Just wondering.
