If a tree falls in the forest, and Democrats go blind and deaf . . .

First the wingnuts came for Bill Clinton,
I remained silent;
I am not Bill Clinton.
When they made up stuff about Gore,
I remained silent;
I am not Gore.
When they lied about John Kerry
I didn't speak up for him;
I complained about how he ran his campaign.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out;
I am a Democrat

(Based on the Rev. Martin Niemller's comments about WWII-era Germany, which appears in the Congressional Record, 14, October 1968, page 31636. H/T Alan.) (Read on; there's more)

LeftyMN pointed me to Digby's great post today. Digby muses about how the mega-smear on Al Gore re electricity usage for his home took hold. He's not alone in his wonderment. Apparently this slimy story has now made its way to Germany, unabated, and untouched by the truth.

It's abundantly clear that the Republics fear Al Gore's potential run for the presidency above all else. As well they should. Gore is more than an 800-pound gorilla. He is quite likely the 200-plus-pound next president of the United States. Recognizing that possibility, the Repubs have begun lobbing dirty bombs in all directions, hoping for a direct hit to bring him down before he's off the blocks.

This is, of course, only the beginning. Frankly, I can't fathom why Gore would subject himself to two years of this disgusting sliming, but he needs to put up his puke shield and come to the aid of the country. The bottom line here, however, is that someone needs to have his back. Where, may I ask, are the Democrats? Why is Howard Dean not unleashing the forces of truth and unity in support of Gore? Why are the Democrats MIA yet again? Digby and others are demanding answers and they're not mincing words:

It's a good question that Dave Johnson and James Boyce go a long way toward answering in their post. There are many factors, but this is, I think, what it really comes down to:

Where was the Democratic National Committee on Tuesday and Wednesday as these lies gained hold? Where was any Democratic-oriented Group? There were the progressive bloggers, Media Matters and CAP's Think Progress and very few others -- the usual suspects -- and this is all that Gore and our other leaders have watching their backs. They sure aren't watching each other's.

I am airing this dirty laundry on the Clothesline today because it's time these things were said out loud. In a recent article, George Lakoff writes about Iran and the words we dare not speak, but must: NUCLEAR WAR. It's an important read.

But my point is that there are other words that must be spoken: The Democrats are failing. They're doing a lousy job of leveraging their majority, of satisfactorily resolving much of anything related to Iraq or Iran, and they are failing to protect their own, e.g., Al Gore.

This man deserves the best we have to give him. He is considering the possibility of sacrificing his personal life for center stage, in order to clean up the horrendous debris in the aftermath of Hurricane George.

Hellooo? Does anybody give a rat's ass? Just wondering.

speaking of Iran...

my firm belief is , (and I hope i am wrong but I somehow acquired this strong sense of cynicism in the past few years) that the meeting that the USA state dept is going to attend with Iran, Syria and other nations about Iraq is simply cover... the power of policy in this White House and controlling Condi is a dark neocon/AEI/AIPAC one...so that I expect Condi to return saying "we tried to talk to them" ....etc.

then we may see alot more "anonymous" Pentagon or State Dept sources releasing news about Syrian or Iranian complicity in Iraq, possibly something with a direct tie to killing American soldiers, as usual , none of this needs to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, the "bloody shirt" always can be waved effectively by the MSM...

after this my crystal ball gets more hypothetical, the possible coup de grace is that since our military especially the ground forces (army, marines, Natl Guard) are stretched to the limit we will turn this next phase over to the Navy and Air Force, and this will be a pre-emptive massive bombing and missiling of any and all Iranian supposed facilities of nuclear production, if there is any retaliation at all by Iran it will be followed by a tactical nuclear strike on at least one Iranian target. The rationale is to prove we mean business and scare the bloody hell out of everyone. Should this happen, oil markets and gold markets will go celestial, and in fact we will be plunged into a global recession. This is a dark prediction I know, but if it is followed to its logical conclusion it could get even darker.
