Just for today . . .

(This just in: Norm Coleman was seen on the U.S. Capitol steps, sucking his index finger and then raising it high over his head. What'll it be today, Norm?)

Just for today, I am going to try to turn my attention away from Republicans and Iraq. There are lots of other things to worry about and hope for besides . . . oh, you know. Here are some random stories, found below-the-fold this day.

I just read that Barbaro is in serious condition after another surgery and the Kentucky Derby winner had a bad night last night. Apparently he's at a critical juncture in his recovery. Sounds as though they'll consider putting him down if he is uncomfortable or sustains additional injuries. I'm not a horsewoman. There's a classic photo of me as a kid, astride a horse, teary and obviously scared. (Also seriously homely. I was probably 11 and poster-girl for awkward stage.) I have always regretted that I don't love horses. They're incredibly beautiful animals. Noble, really. And so at this great distance, I am brooding a bit about Barbaro's precarious status. That's all.

Update:Barbaro lost his gutsy battle. He was put to sleep this afternoon. How sad.

(Just for today, I will not look at any story with Republicans or Iraq in the headline.)

Then there's the story about Perky'"the female duck that was shot by a hunter, popped into the refrigerator for two days, raised her head to stare at the hunter's wife when she opened the fridge door (probably scaring the living wits out of her), and then while undergoing surgery on her shattered wing, went into shock and had to be resuscitated. You gotta love a duck with that much pluck. You go, girl.

Less amusing is the difficult recovery of Californian Jim Hamm, the 70-year-old hiker brutally attacked by a mountain lion. Hamm's wife, Nell, beat off the lion, saving her husband's life. Now he is fighting infection and his condition has been downgraded to serious. Though no one asked me personally, I imagine the Hamms would appreciate kind thoughts and positive vibes.

Prince Charles and Camilla are in the United States. New York. Philadelphia. Splendid, eh what?

(Just for today, I will not look at any story with Republicans or Iraq in the headline.)

HuffPost reports that Air America has been rescued from bankruptcy by Manhattan real estate mogul Stephen Green. Al Franken will be leaving the network soon to explore options re: running for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota.

SENATE REPUBLICANS ARE STALLING! THEY'RE FILBUSTERING AND DELAYING PASSAGE OF A NEW MINIMUM WAGE LAW TO AVOID UPCOMING IRAQ-RELATED VOTES. THE MISERABLE MISANTHROPES! THE SPINELESS WEENIES!

(Just for today, I will not look at any story with Republicans or Iraq in the headline. Just for today, I will not look at any story with Republicans or Iraq in the headline. I will not look at any story . . . .)

Babs, you are the best! I'm in a news hole in Chicago, where stories of plucky ducks, hurting horses (RIP Barbaro) and mauling mountain lions are superceded by talk of the football Bears.
Yes, there's a NYTimes down on the kitchen counter, and yes, I can get on line, but on borrowed time in a house where I am a guest. Thanks for trying to keep us away from Republicans and Iraq (and Iran) for a day. Be back tomorrow, see what I can dredge up then. SL
