Yes, dear readers, there is life other than the continuing saga of Foleygate.
The Minnesota boys of summer have lost and the mythic rise to glory is over. The Twins were swept in 3 straight games by the Oakland Athletics, two of them at home, and never once in the three game series did our lads ever have a lead in a game. In baseball statistics the Oakland Athletics had 26 hits, the Twins 24, but the total runs scored were Oakland 16 and Minnesota 7.
Like their Greek predecessors, the baseball gods are fickle. Joe Mauer (Achilles), Justin Morneau (Hercules), and Johan Santana (Prometheus), so blessed from June to September, faded in October like the falling leaves of a poplar tree in a brisk autumnal wind. Achilles, the brave youth, could not rally his team, Hercules was not agile enough to make the 3rd out in inning 7, and Prometheus, upon whom the sun has shone the brightest'his wings were proven false, and he was left winless in the post season.
So we who follow this child's game in Minnesota are left to wait for another year, another season. The colors of fall will fade and the snows will return. We will give Thanks in late November and celebrate the year end holidays with kith and kin.
Life does go on, but mark your calendars' pitchers and catchers will report for training in Florida in February''.
